Dairy Digestive Enzymes
Healthy and efficient digestion of milk and dairy products requires the body to produce the necessary enzymes in sufficient quantities to digest the sugars, fats and protein in these foods. People with Lactose intolerance or some inflammatory bowel disorders can benefit by supplementing with dairy digestive enzymes, particularly lactase. Lactase and Lactose Intolerance: Lactose Intolerance is the inherent inability in some people to produce enough of the enzyme lactase for the digestion of lactose, the major sugar found in milk. Symptoms include gastric cramps, bloating, flatulence, as well as diarrhoea after ingesting lactose-containing substances.
In addition, Lactose intolerance is also frequently related to the difficult-to-digest proteins and fats inherent in dairy products, due to insufficient amounts of protease and lipase digestive enzymes.
(The condition should not be confused with milk allergies, which is an immune response). It has also been suggested that lactose intolerant people have a problem with calcium absorption.
It is estimated that up to 15% of the UK population are lactose intolerant, although many of these people are unaware that they have the condition.
Lactase and Bowel Disorders: Since Lactase is produced by the cells that line the small intestine, people with bowel disorders may not be able to produce enough of the enzymes to digest dairy products. These include
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
inflammatory bowel including Crohn's disease & Diverticulitis
celiac disease
sufferers of migraine headaches may also benefit since certain studies indicate that migraine sufferers are deficient in lactase
NOW® Dairy Digest Complete is a comprehensive blend of digestive enzymes that is formulated to aid in the complete digestion of dairy products, including lactose, as well as dairy proteins and fats:-
Lactase: Lactase is a gut enzyme required to break down lactose (a primary sugar found in mammalian milk) and is produced in the small intestine, which breaks lactose into two simpler sugars
Protease: Protease refers to a group of enzymes whose function it is to break down proteins and are also referred to as proteolytic enzymes or proteinases. The proteins are broken down to their basic building blocks - amino acids.
Lipase: Lipase is the enzyme required to break down fats and lipids. Lipase is produced in the pancreas, and is released in the small intestine.
With Dairy Digest Complete, it is possible to ease temporary discomfort associated with the incomplete digestion of dairy products, while enjoying their taste and health benefits
