Bilberry

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) produces a fruit similar to blueberry, which yields an active component known as anthocyanoside. These compounds help build strong capillaries and improve circulation to all areas of the body. They also prevent blood platelets from clumping together.

Bilberry also contains tannins which have an antioxidant and astringent action.

Bilberry & Eye Health: Bilberry's anthocyanosides help regenerate rhodopsin, the purple pigment that is used by the rods in the eye for night vision. Anthocyanidins in Bilberry may also help protect the retina.. Studies conducted in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s suggest that improve symptoms of a variety of visual disturbances including nearsightedness, cataracts, and macular degeneration, probably due to Bilberry's ability to increase circulation to the small blood vessels of the eyes responsible for visual function.

Bilberry is best known for its reported ability to improve and protect vision, especially for the elderly and diabetics. One preliminary trial found that supplementation with a standardized extract of bilberry improved signs of retinal damage in some people with diabetic retinopathy.
