Spring: Hayfever & Allergy Health Supplements |
|
|
Spring is in The Air... And so is pollen, which for many people brings the misery of Hayfever. This allergy occurs when your immune system over-reacts to a harmless invader (pollen) and produces large amounts of anti-bodies to fight it off. This stimulates mast cells in your nose, eyes, throat and lungs, to release histamine, causing runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing and sneezing.
Natural anti-inflammatory and anti-histstamine nutrition can help normalize immunity when your body's defences are overactive, making your change of season experience a pleasant one. |
HayFever: A natural antihistamine diet will include Beta carotene rich foods, such as the red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidant bioflavonoids and vitamin C. Onions and apples are an additional source of anti-inflammatory quercetin bioflavanoids. Dark green foods (spinach, rocket, broccoli) help to eliminate excess toxins in the body and also contain large amounts of beta carotene. Pineapples provide anti-inflammatory enzyme, bromelain.
Cut down on mucous promoting dairy foods and replace with goats, sheep, rice, oat and soya milk products. Drink plenty of water, tea and fruit juices to help eliminate toxins. Reduce your intake of pro-inflammatory omega 6 fatty acids (sunflower and other seed oils) and substitute with olive oil, as well as increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids by eating oily fish .

Nutritional Supplements: There are a range of herbal remedies and natural health supplements to help combat hayfever:
• Butterbur: Butterbur is the most popular herbal remedy as scientific studies have found Butterbur, to be as effective as the antihistamine cetirizine (Zyrtec) & fexofenadine (Allegra) for treating hayfever
• Quercetin: the antioxidant flavonoid Quercetin can act as a natural antihistamine in reducing allergy symptoms
• Vitamin C: High dose vitamin C helps support immune system.
• Nettle: Nettle (Urtica dioica) has a long tradition of use for the relief of allergy and hayfever symptoms, and is a soothing herb for the respiratory system
• Bromelain: the proteolytic enzyme Bromelain has anti-inflammatory properties and is useful for sinus symptoms
• Omega Oils: the essential fatty acids (EFA) Omega 3 and Omega 6 are precursors for prostaglandins, which are produced by the immune system.

Be an Early Bird! Start taking your remedies of choice in March in order to prepare your immune system for the onslaught to come, and stay indoors with a good HEPA air filter running as much as possible on days when the pollen count is high. |
